A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow
4.0
Zinnia’s 21st birthday is extra special because it’ll be here very last birthday. When she was young an industrial accident left her with a rare condition and not much is known about her illness except that no one lives past 21. On said 21st birthday her best friend Charm’s goal is to make her birthday the best one yet, with a full Sleeping Beauty experience castle, spinning wheel and all. When Zinnia pricks her finger she gets transported to another world where another sleeping beauty is just as desperate to escape her fate.
A Spindle Splintered is a queer Sleeping Beauty examination with wit and unique twists. Retellings are a dime a dozen out there but this one is so worth the read. I loved the adventure/quest like feel. Harrow’s insertion of feminist undertones had me putting my fist up in the air.
This novella also had me laughing at parts and thinking “oh that was clever I see what you did there Harrow”. I’ve read a couple of her books now but this one has been my favourite so far. There was something very charming and sharp about this story.
Thank you @tordotcompub for sending me the ARC in exchange for an honest review. A Spindle Splintered gets 4✨ from me. I’m looking forward to the next instalment in this series, a look into Snow White! Also, can I just mention I absolutely loved the other 3 @tordotcompub titles that came out this year. Knocked it out of the part in 2021!
