The Code Breaker by Walter Isaacson

challenging informative reflective medium-paced

4.0

I had real trouble grasping the science of genes/DNA/RNA/life when I was in biology class, and adult Kathy reading this book was no different. To my surprise, Walter Isaacson didn't dumb things down quite enough so that I could really get a handle on how it all works. And though that did hamper my enjoyment of the book just a bit as I sat there trying to puzzle out the diagrams of RNA, I really enjoyed reading about the kind of cutthroat world of science discoveries, publications, and patents.

There was a lot of drama beyond the science itself to appreciate here, as well as the obviously very impactful and impressive feats achieved by Jennifer Doudna and her colleagues throughout. And learning more about their contributions to the fight against Covid-19 was still very timely and will always impress me. So even if you're intimidated by the headiness of the topic, don't be afraid to dive into this book, [try to] learn a bit, and ponder the big questions posed by the science you may or may not understand. Because whether or not you get how it works, you'll certainly get why it's so important and what kind of impact such technology and scientific development can have on all of us.
