Recitatif by Toni Morrison

5.0

This is simply just a masterclass. Toni Morrison is one of the only authors who could successfully pull this off. The whole time I was scrutinizing each and every detail to figure out who out of the two main characters, Twyla and Roberta, was black and who was white. Zadie Smith’s introduction sets the stage beautifully and gave this book the justice it deserves. What Toni Morrison accomplished with this short story could never be replicated.
