I'm torn about this one. I love all the historical detail, but I don't love the shoehorning in of Martha Jackson, for one thing [though I understand why GB did it]. And a white woman writing in the voice of not one but multiple Black men, no matter how well-intentioned, is particularly awkward in the modern part of the story. The last quarter or so of the book felt rushed, which is quite an accomplishment in such a long book. But I understand GB's husband died suddenly while she was writing it so that might have had something to do with it.
