“Demon Copperhead” has joined not only my list of all time favorite books but the ranks of a few books I would recommend to anyone. I’ll start this review  by confessing I have never read “David Copperfield”, but it’s clearly not a prerequisite for this Dickens retelling set in 1990s Appalachia. I listened to the audiobook, and it was impossible not to adore and root for Demon. The narrator, Charlie Hurston, really brought him to life and did an accurate accent without any hints of making fun of people from Appalachia. One of the main themes of the book is now America treats the region, so I was happy to see the narration remain true to that message. This book deals with heavy topics particularly the opioid epidemic and the darkness of addiction. It’s an emotional read and Demon’s coming-of-age story is raw. I think it’s safe to say in addition to being a Pulitzer Prize winner, “Demon Copperhead” will be a modern classic.
