The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

5.0

this is one of the best retellings I've ever read! I can't produce words that will express how much I enjoyed this book.

I've never been a fan of Greek mythology. I knew a little from like 7th grade or something. Also, my knowledge of this subject matter came from watching the movie Troy when I was 9 (yep, I did watch that at a very young age). I never knew that Achilles and Patroclus were lovers, nor had any slightest idea that they were not heterosexuals. I've always thought that Briseis was Achilles' lover.

Miller stepped beyond the boundaries and crafted this beautiful story, without sounding like a history book. The words were just pure, honest, and evocative, without leaning to flowery and outlandish metaphors and stilted dialogue. Just the right balance of showing vs. telling for me to get invested with the plot and the characters.

I didn't cry though. (HA!)

Because of this, I think I would dedicate more of my time this quarantine season deep-diving the fascinating world of the Ancient Greeks.

SO. MUCH. LOVE!
