Mary Roach’s gonzo-ish journalistic foray into the world of sexual research is both fun and informative. While she does try to answer questions like, “Why doesn’t Viagra work for women?” or, “How can paraplegics have orgasms?” her only guiding principle is to learn more about how we research sex, a solid question given that we seem to know so little about such an integral part of life. If you can’t tell by the cover, this writing is not for the prudish and will be much more enjoyable if you can have a sense of humor about it all, Roach sure does. Her humor ranges the spectrum from knee-slappers to dad jokes, but ultimately it does compliment her story quite well. It is as insightful as it is easy to read, which makes for an unfortunately rare combo in the non-fiction world. I also appreciate her perspective; she has no agenda she’s hand picking experts and studies to push. She simply found people willing to let her observe (and sometimes participate) and asked the kind of questions, well, anyone would. I look forward to reading more from her.
