Cursor's Fury by Jim Butcher

3.0

These are really like potato chips. Butcher advances his young hero to inadvertent command of a legion, while keeping two other plot threads spinning out successfully against internal plotting and civil war. The high fantasy setting is just this side of campy, and the appealing message is that hard work and Roman engineering may well be better than lazy reliance on magic when repelling an invasion by giant, ferocious dog-people.
