Yeepers.
I can't say this book got me extremely emotionally invested. I can't say I connected with every character so deeply. I can't say it was everything I've ever looked for in an amazing book.
But it was pure suspense, and that's exactly what I was expecting. (At one point when I picked up the book again, I literally squealed with anticipation. I do not squeal.)
The prose was also surprisingly well-written at times. More than once I found myself re-reading passages and smiling at the way the author chose to use her words.
I do have to warn you (although it should be pretty obvious since this book contains elements of fantasy)—you may have to suspend your disbelief. These kids pull off some impressive schemes that could never be done in real life. But that only adds to the complete escapism this book offers. (Please excuse the pun.)
That all said, I would recommend this book to any middle grade reader who's itching for wild action and tight tension. You'll definitely find it here.
