Once upon a time, Naomi King told her dad she loved him, but not the horror stories he wrote, so he set out to write a story fit for a 13 year old girl. The Eyes of the Dragon is that fairy tale, with a Stephen King twist.
ā€¢
Different from anything else heā€™s written, itā€™s a fantasy story with a definite YA feel. I love the way this story is told, the mystery of the narrator, and the dark elements. I love the setting and how the reader is transported back to a time of kings, knights, dragons, and of courseā€¦magicians. I also love that King created a secondary character, a strong, independent female, and named her after his daughter; what a great dad move.
ā€¢
There are a lot of other great characters, but Flagg is the clear star of this book. While featured in other King stories, most notably The Stand and the dark tower series, this is where he truly shines as the villain heā€™s meant to be.

The Eyes of the Dragon isnā€™t perfect, but it remains a favorite of mine. I love that King wasnā€™t afraid to try something completely new. Most constant readers know that heā€™s much more than a horror writer, but this is one of the first ways he proved it.

ā€œDid they all live happily ever after?
They did not.ā€

I mean itā€™s still King; what did you expect?
