Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
5.0
4.5 Stars!
“I had absolutely no interest in being somebody else's muse.
I am not a muse.
I am the somebody.
End of fucking story.”
You know, how there is always one author whose stories simply touches your soul? Well, I think I have found that author in Taylor Jenkins Reid. There is something so subtle, raw and human about her books and the characters she pens down which, makes them so compelling and fascinating. Honestly, after reading Evelyn Hugo and loving it with all my heart, I was a little sceptical going into this book, I was desperately hoping to love this book the same way I loved Evelyn Hugo, turns out I didn’t need to fear because I flew through this book and it was everything I hoped from TJR and then some.
The book is set during the 70’s, following the story of the most famous rock band of that era, “Daisy Jones & The Six”. Set in the interview format we get POV’s from band members including Billy, Graham, Warren, Daisy, Karen, Eddie as well as from some other people associated with the band as they narrate their memories of the events leading to the rise and the eventual break-up of the band.
“I think you have to have faith in people before they earn it. Otherwise it's not faith, right?”
What sets this book apart is its style of narration and I know a lot of people may feel differently about the interview format but I feel it works splendidly with this book because for this story to be told it’s important to hear everybody’s POV and I don’t think it could have been possible without this kind of narration style. In fact, I think only an author as talented as TJR could have pulled this off without losing the emotion and depth of the story. And mind you, this is one of those books which will really make you ponder and will make you question about human nature and its fragilities.
The atmosphere of this novel has such a rustic feel to it and I couldn’t get enough of the characters or the process of music creation which won so many hearts. TJR wrote some beautiful lyrics, which the band plays in the book and it made this book so much more authentic, enigmatic and real. Also, I think TJR did such a wonderful job with the representation of addiction and substance abuse and the highs and lows of an addict’s life. It was so thought provoking and tear- jerking.
“Passion is...it's fire. And fire is great, man. But we're made of water. Water is how we keep living. Water is what we need to survive. My family was my water. I picked water. I'll pick water every time.”
As for the characters, hell! I was so invested in their lives. The characters are all multi-dimensional and flawed, they make some stupid decision and does a lot of shitty stuff. Honestly, they aren’t a very likeable bunch, at one point, I really wanted to punch Daisy and Billy for acting all high and mighty but even then, a part of me understood where they were coming from and that’s the beauty of TJR writing. Plus, the relationship dynamics, like I can’t even stress how beautifully TJR establishes every relationship in the story and they, like the characters comprises everything good, bad and ugly that goes on in any relationship.
Also, I really want to talk about the female relationship/ friendships and the strength that each woman of this stories shows, they are all so different from each other and want different things from their lives yet they possess a lot of agency, they stand for what they believe in, support each other and doesn’t back down even when all the odds are stacked against them. My favourite is Camila, Like I can’t imagine the things she had to go through and I know many women including me would have chosen to give up and let go rather than have faith, but not Camila and for that alone she stood as the star of the book for me.
“I wore what I wanted when I wanted. I did what I wanted with who I wanted. And if somebody didn’t like it, screw’em.”
Among so much awesomeness, the only thing I felt a little lacking was the story anti-climactic ending. I felt it to be a little abrupt after such a deep and strong build up. Other than that, this was such an amazing read for me and believe me when I say this I can’t stop thinking about it Just read it okay!
