Brainerd's ability to present the innermost thoughts of a fifteen-year-old mind--specificially those of a fifteen-year-old girl--is astounding. For most of the book I was caught between frustration about the unsettling ease with which so many unsettling topics are breezed by (particularly the relationship each of our protagonists had with a much older man) and the horrifying realization that it was relatable.
