The Daughter of Odren by Ursula K. Le Guin

4.0

The Daughter of Odren feels like one of the more complete short stories in the Earthsea cycle - the conflict is engaging, the characters realistic and empathizable (is that a word?) and the descriptions of the environment unparalleled. It does not feel like a solid final story in the cycle, which is a situation that is easily mended by Firelight (2018), but rather a well-crafted interlude that would have been a wonderful addition to Tales from Earthsea, even if the themes explored do not line up with the general theme of sexuality, celibacy and the patriarchal structures of wizarddom.
