I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes

1.0

I finally found it: the worst book ever written.

What can I say about this dumpster fire that hasn't already been said? It's hard to find something new to say, so I'll just give a quick summarization on why this book needs to go down in history as how never to write a book.

First off, the characters. They're less characters and more caricature. If a characters isn't a fit attractive white man, they are reduced to their stereotypes: Women are either unbelievably attractive with insanely high cheekbones, or repulsively fat. None of them have any defining characters other than that. Including their personalities. Everyone not white are reduced to horrible racial stereotypes (if you ever needed a definition of Islamophobia, look no further to this book).

Second, the plot: It need major focus. I feel as though this book is in desperate need of an editor; it feels so much like a first draft. The big hook at the beginning, a compelling murder mystery, is thrown out the window as it's starting to ramp up with only sparing references to it throughout the rest of this Goliath of a 'novel'.

On that note, this book makes every bad decision to keep the "plot" going. Every time I get even slightly invested in what's going on, the author abandons it for something far less interesting. And the choices that lead to the newer scenes are laughable.

In the end, this book was an exercise in persistence and suffering. The only reason I kept going was a family member lent me the book and I wanted to get to the end to make sure I wasn't missing anything.
