The World Keeps Ending, and the World Goes on by Franny Choi
3.0
Bleak and mystifying. I had to put this book down several times. Given the topics and themes that are explored (it's a book about various apocalypses), it failed to truly draw me in. It just made me feel tired. The fourth section was probably my favorite. Choi is undoubtedly smart, but her previous book Soft Science had more imaginative reach. I've taught poems from Soft Science with my classes before and the students always have such wonderful responses to them. They definitely resonate.
For me, a poetry book's success often lies in how often we return to its words. I know I will return to Soft Science in the future. This one, probably not.
