I loved this. This is probably the book that convinced me to read this whole damn series which, considering it is a web serial, could be a very long time.

A large part of this book was dealing with a city suffering from a plague and how Elaine and her medical knowledge left over from Earth tries to save this city. We got a bit of Mystery solving while working your ass off to absolute exhaustion and I loved every minute of it.

Besides that the series doesn’t really have an overarching plot aside from the MC trying to find her way in the world and you know, leveling up. But I also feel like those parts are handled very lovingly. There are tons of feelings of camaraderie and the bantering between the characters is excellent.

It just never feels like the story is meandering. There are often cases of side plots coming up where you think that other stories could make a long arc out of it but instead it is just neatly handled within one short chapter. I now feel like there are two ways of tackling this. Either fully lean into it and explore absolutely everything like The Wandering Inn does it or the approach that this series takes. In Between can feel very bad.

Also the story is still capable of pulling the occasional out of nowhere hard hitting gut punch and if you’re already super emotionally invested they hit even harder.

I have to mention the stat floods / stat walls as well. I feel like they have gotten worse. Getting a full stat breakdown at least every second chapter, sometimes every chapter is annoying. I am speeding up the audio through these which makes it bearable but if that trend continues I could maybe see my perception flip.

This book also ended on an Interlude where we got introduced to a new POV character and so far I am not that much of a fan since it seems like her background story is somewhat similar to Elaines but that would be a case of too early to tell.

For now though I am adoring going through this series. Onto book 3 immediately. Glad for having some extra Audible credits. I am already dreading the moment when they run out. :)
