2/5⭐

I bought this book with a friend after we read the blurb together and thought it sounded interesting. Though the premise was great and had me intrigued, I found the execution of the book lacking.

The book follows Evangeline Fox, a girl who's head is stuck on looking for her happily ever after. She's always believed in magic and fairytales, but after she makes a deal with the Fate Jack's, the Price of Hearts, her world is thrown into turmoil.

So there's a lot that goes on in this book, and not a whole lot of pages to fit it all into. This left the book feeling incredible rushed. When you first open the book, you're just thrown into a mess and its a little disorientating. You don't get any chance to process anything that's happening and you're just thrown from one scene to another. Overall, it just felt like the book didn't flow very well and very disjointed.

In addition to this, there's a lot of information dumping on the reader, which made me lose focus because it just kind of drones on and on and on. This information dumping also happens when plot twists are attempted to be revealed, which makes the twists rather underwhelming and kind of boring. Mind you, the plot twists were extremely predictable and I wasn't exactly shocked by anything that happened in this book.

Another thing that was underwhelming were the characters. The main character, Evangeline, irritated me quite a bit. I know she's meant to be fixated on fairytales and believing in love at first sight, but I just could not stand her naïveté and utter idiocy. At some point, you have to realise how absolutely ridiculous you are behaving and how irrational your choices are. However, she just never seems to get a grip and I was getting increasingly frustrated as I got through the book.

Jacks, the Fate that Evangeline makes a deal with, was less irritating to read about. However, there wasn't really much to make him stand out. He was a little bit drab but overall, a very average male character.

There were a few attempts at relationship building between the characters, however the complete lack of connection between any of the characters made it all seem very forced. I don't know who I was supposed to be rooting for, but I don't root for anybody.

The plot was honestly just a mess. It went in one direction, then the other, the decided to do a giant 360 and a couple spins just for funsies. The plot was so scattered and unclear that it honestly just left me confused half the time. There were a couple scenes that had me interested, but majority of the book was so bland that I couldn't wait to finish this book fast enough.

Both the characters and plot lacked depth or personality. Nothing really hooked me until the end where there was a cliffhanger but that's probably just because I have FOMO and not because the plot was actually interesting. Regardless, I will not be picking up the next book. I don't exactly wish to subject myself to another book like this.
