Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas
5.0
2015 Review: Perhaps the best book I've read (or am going to read) this year.
All the waiting. All the anticipation and excitement. It didn't disappoint.
The world in which Celaena Sardothien/Aelin Ashryver Galathynius lives and breathes, from the empire forged by Adarlan from other conquered nations, to Wendlyn the home of the Fae, to the Western Wastes that the Ironteeth Witches covet so dearly, to the sands that are sanctuary to the Silent Assassins, the series of "Throne of Glass" has enraptured me body, mind and soul. It is honestly one of the most thrilling, entertaining, beloved and well-written young adult/fantasy series I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Not once did I falter throughout the many chapters, thinking that any particular chapter was unneeded, boring or a chore. Not once did I become annoyed with any tropes and cliches, for there was only one, and I love it. There were so many twists and turns, such clever story telling, filled with great revelations, shocking moments and ultimate plot twists, that it was hard for me to put the book down to call it a day/night. So many moments I feared for these characters, this world, and I didn't feel an ounce of shame realising that I'm so emotionally attached to this story. I cheered in triumph. I grinned with happiness. I cried with despair. So many raging emotions coursed through me as I watched Celaena become Aelin, obliterating the assassin she once was. So many feelings, of pride, love and joy, at seeing her becoming Terrasen's Queen as she ought to be. So many smiles given to her relationship with her court members. Even some envy, at the love between Aelin and Rowan - I hope to find a love like that someday (even if I thought Chaolaena was forever, I can see why Maas pursued a different course of love interest for my favourite heroine). My poor baby Dorian, my heart ached for him. Chaol, oh how I wept for you. Even Kaltain made me feel something. EVEN Manon Blackbeak, who is without a heart, had me feeling things. But most of all, my beloved Aelin: thank you. And thank you, Sarah J Maas, for once more, making me fall in love with this world.
2017 Review: I still agree with most points I made in my last review. However, I feel like I need to give QoS a 4.5/5 stars, only because I felt that at some stages, the events happening could have been omitted (then again, SJM usually doesn't do anything for nothing). Other than that though, my god I love this series.
