Paper Girls, Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan
5.0
I have been craving a more plot focused graphic novel and it seems like this may be it. I am so happy to have finally picked up this first volume.
The story so far has a really great contrast in tone between that feeling of childhood nostalgia and the gut punch of a vaguely menacing and violent future. The role that current technology plays also looks like it is going to be an interesting through line that we don't often see. I can't name the last time I saw a person wearing earbuds in a sci-fi story and that feels weird to think about. The time travel seems like it is going to be the trippy element and that will really make or break how readable this story is. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes!
Don't even get me started on the art though. The art is so perfectly stylized and the colouring could actually sweep me off my feet. It has been so long since I could gush about a colourist and I am so happy about it.
