“See the TURTLE, ain't he keen? All things serve the fuckin Beam.”

The Gunslinger was the prologue of our journey to the dark tower, best enjoyed the second time around. The Drawing of the Three was almost nonstop action as that journey went from a solo mission to a trio making their way to mid-world; we finally got a taste of what was coming. In The Waste Lands, our ka-tet is finally complete and our journey is underway.

Ka-tet - One made from many. In place of my typical completely biased review where I gush about my love for this series, allow me to introduce the cast, now that they’re all assembled. And in case the quote above didn’t adequately prepare you, there will be cursing.

Roland `The Mad Dog’ of Gilead - The last of the gunslingers before the world moved on and the leader of the ka-tet. “Of them all, he had been the most perfectly made, a man whose deeply romantic core was encased in a brutally simple box which consisted of instinct and pragmatism.” Practical. Stoic. A bad motherfucker.

Eddie `Fucking’ Dean of New York - Redemption personified. Perpetually trapped between adolescence and adulthood. Quick witted, always ready to ease the tension with a joke. Loving. Loyal. The heart of the group.

Susannah Dean of New York - The most complex character of the ka-tet; she’s three women in one body, mind, and soul. Smart. Mean. Fierce. The guts of the group.

Jake of New York - He’s given his life for Roland’s quest, and would do so again, for any member of the ka-tet. He knows there are other worlds than these, and this is the world he chose. The conscience of the group.

Oy of mid-world - The bravest, cutest, smartest little Billy-bumbler that ever was. The goodest boi. Perfection. OY🖤

We meet a lot of other characters is this one, including a psychotic monorail with an affinity for riddles. Blaine is a pain and that’s the truth, but I love him and his riddles!  King breaks out all the big guns for this one. It’s a fantasy, western, romance, sci-fi, adventure with a heap of horror, and heart. You’ll feel ALL the emotions, including an intense anger bordering on hatred for King when you realize this ends on a massive cliffhanger.

Fortunately, I don’t have to wait six years to find out what happens next, like those poor souls who read this one on its release. This is the book that digs its hooks in and doesn’t let go. ALL THE STARS.
