Sometimes, arc reading is a curse upon my mental stability. Reading books before their release is so fun and I love sharing my thoughts cause I am nothing if not a yapper. But when those books end on a cliffhanger that makes me want to shrivel up and die, I am then left to grapple with the fact that I now have to wait x amount of time for the release of the next book. This does not sit well with me. I enjoyed this book so much more than I thought I would, which is great but feels terrible in the aftermath. 🫠

Spark of Pursuit follows our main woman Ava, vigilante by night and socialite by day. Both sexy and highly insecure our resident vigilante brings the best of both worlds into the otherwise normal(ish) life of sexy cop man (ACAB 😉✌🏽) Graydon (ngl I can't with this name). Together they grapple with the uncommon danger of anti-magic terrorism and those of the heart as they grapple with their emotions. It's so messy and I ate it up.

There were so many aspects of the story that I loved and had me unable to put the book down. The world was very interesting being split between immortal beings with magic stuck and happy in the past and with human innovation pushing those without powers to new discoveries. Seeing those notions come together was interesting and took a little bit to get used to. There were things I would have liked to see expanded upon such as the idea of the monsters. We are told that dangerous monsters exist in this world and a handful of our main cast have fought them personally but we never once see one in the story. I'm hoping that with the next book, we'll actually get to see more of the world and its dangers.

The characters were fun. I genuinely enjoyed watching Ava and Graydon go back and forth and I was grinning and kicking my feet every time they had an interaction. By the end of the book, I was on the edge of my seat stressed about where they'd be by the end and all I can say is that the next book cannot come fast enough. I feel like it's very rarely the female character who takes on the role of the one holding info back or doing dumb betraying shit to keep the other safe and I loved seeing the roles reversed. Female vigilantes are now a new favourite of mine.

With that being said, I despise her brother Coren. He isn't outwardly a terrible guy or another and maybe I'm projecting but so many things about the way he treats Ava rub me in all the wrong ways. Slight spoilers.
After being the one to reach out to ask her to come help him he immediately starts getting on some egotistical high horse bullshit almost every time they interact. Despite knowing what she might have been feeling and going through and knowing why she is the way she is he still treats her like she is someone to be handled and doesn't ever stand up for her when others treat her as such too (I'm looking at you Mr security man I can't remember the name of). He rarely takes her opinions or feelings into account and actually usually dismisses them, actively hiding imperative information that could literally mean life or death for her.
Spoiler End. I'm really hoping his character is redeemed for me in the next book because I am a sucker for good sibling relationships, especially when one acknowledges how shitty they were to the other.

This book was such a treat, especially upon learning that the author is from Vancouver! Books I get into are rarely by Canadian authors and it was kind of fun learning we went to the same university. I am so excited to see where this story goes and see how the world and its characters are expanded upon.
