The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones

5.0

I gave this book a 4.25 stars out of 5 stars.

TW for: graphic scenes, violence, and abuse.

I am not an own voices reviewer so please check out various indigenous book reviewers, booktubers, bloggers, etc for a more honest and accurate review.

I don’t usually read horror or supernatural fiction but I had heard from various indigenous booktubers that this is a great book and has great rep so I wanted to read it.

This book is great and the story is great as well. This book has multiple perspectives (first person, third person) so it can get confusing at times but you can follow along.

I loved the various themes that the author provided throughout the book. The story touched on themes about domestic violence, the self-hate indigenous people have due to colonialism and white supremacy, how indigenous people are demonized and thought to be at the bottom and just the lore and significance of Elk in Blackfeet culture. I really liked how these themes were interwoven with each character’s story and arc. It really made me think about things about the indigenous communities that we stereotype as a society and also don’t know about.

I also liked the female and male dynamic the author put out and how the story ended up with this dynamic.

This was a great book and I’ll have to reread it, to better understand the depth and story.
