Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea by Charles Seife

5.0

My calculus teacher recommended that I read this book. It follows the history of zero. People died for the concept of zero. Zero was forbidden; belief in it was the equivalent of denying the existence of God, which is crazy to think about. Zero is also very closely tied with the concept of infinity, as strange as that may seem. This book starts at the beginning with the first number systems. It also explains discrepencies with various calanders and just a lot of really interesting mathematical concepts revolving around the number zero. It requires a decent amount of concentration to read- definitely not something to casually read while in the middle of something else. But it was worth the time and the ocasional head ache. I would say that anyone who enjoys math would enjoy this book. It is also written with a bit of humour, so it isn't dry like some would expect a book about math to be.
