The Origin Of Ostracism: A Synthesis by Rudi Thomsen
3.0
3.5 stars.
This book provides a fine compilation of existing scholarship on its issues up to the time of publication, although, being originally published in 1972, it is not entirely up to date now. It contains good examination of the ostraca found, organised by each excavation (and cited according to findings published at the time), which of course must have been a necessary effort in the time before Brenne, and the examination of the evidence is logical. Some of the author’s own opinions may be under scrutiny (he is perhaps too dismissive of the written sources we have, which do not seem to give any particular reason to doubt), but the summary of arguments by others still makes it a useful read.
