Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert

5.0

Chloe and Red fell in love with each other... and I fell in love with this book!

Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert was an absolute delight to read and it's now one of my top favorite romance novels. This book delivered all of the best romance novel tropes, but with a new kind of freshness and novelty that kept me deeply invested in Chloe and Red's relationship!

This book was so easy to eat up! The chemistry between the two leads is amazingly fun and so hot that I could feel myself blushing! It is full of fluff with light and clever banter, but also discusses heavy themes like abuse and trauma with a strong sense of awareness and insight. Abuse is discussed by the victims in the past tense, and it is not gratuitous or graphic in any way. Which I especially appreciated because so rarely does abuse get represented in books or movies with respect. In Get a Life, Chloe Brown, abuse and trauma are allowed to exist for the sake of recovery and not for the sake of entertainment or shock. One of my favorite lines from the book is: "'I know the difference between torture and growing pains.'" That line really stuck with me. The vulnerability, the fear and the commitment to growth shared by the two leads was such a fresh take on generic impulsive attitudes that pervade mainstream rom-coms. There is so much care that went into writing this healthy romantic couple, and it was very believable for me.

There are graphic sex scenes within the book, and I'm gonna be honest, I loved them! I thought they were tasteful and sexy. I am very sick of romance novels insinuating sex, rather than depicting it, and so rarely do disabled women of color get to be represented as having consensual and pleasurable sex (and Chloe was gettin' it). I'm a lady and I like sex and I want to read about it! I'm glad I could find peace within with this book.

I cannot rave enough about this book! I'm going to recommend it to all of my friends and I'm currently reading the sequel Take a Hint, Dani Brown! Talia Hibbert says she wants to write sexy, diverse romance with honest and positive representation? She has succeeded!
