Fortuna Sworn by K.J. Sutton

4.0

(3.5 stars)

You know when you read a book and you spend majority of it thinking, “I’m going to rate this three stars”, but then it ends on the best cliffhanger you’ve read in a while and now you’re confused? Well, that’s how I’m feeling now!

This book started right in the action, which I thoroughly enjoyed. We follow Fortuna Sworn, a ‘Nightmare’, who is the last of her kind (ever since her parents were killed and her brother [Damon] went missing). She does her best to blend in with mankind, working at a bar during the day and looking for Damon at night. But one day, she catches the attention of a faerie, Collith. He tells her that Damon is alive and promises to help her find him in exchange for her hand in marriage. Unable to pass this opportunity up, Fortuna goes with Collith to the Unseelie Court. But here, she realises that her own life may be at stake in order to save her brother.

‘Nightmares’ as creatures is such a cool premise. I really liked all the different characters in this, especially Fortuna. She’s so brave and loyal to her family. I just felt as though the trials (mainly the second and third ones) at the Unseelie Court were over too fast and could’ve been written with more detail. BUT THE ENDING!!!! I am obsessed with the cliffhanger and now I have to read the second novel just so I can learn more about this world!

This book was also written in quite a YA style although it has some very dark (and spicy) themes. Definitely check trigger warnings before reading this one
