Černý tulipán by Alexandre Dumas
3.0
I would’t be reading this book if I wouldn’t have got it as a gift. (“You liked Monte Christo? Here’s another Dumas book and it’s black!”) Well I was sceptical. But hey the book does look good (I’m talking about czech version from Odeon: Knihovna Klasiků edition. Such a gem.)
But I was really surprised after few pages. The brutal murder got me and with anger I continued.
Dumas really can make you feel hate for the injustice. I like Dumas more and more. He’s absolutely amazing storyteller who can got you sucked in every story. Plus not only he was very clever man but also did his research so the historical background of his stories is perfectly legit. (Yes, even the mania over tulips wasn’t nonsense, Netherlands really had this obssesive era.)
I suffered a lot during reading because I felt the injustice and the suspense. At the end I almost had a tear in my eye.
Monte Christo remains my favourite Dumas’ book. Actually, Monte Christo is one of my favourite characters ever. But this book shows the genial of Dumas’ writings and it’s really compelling.
