We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal
2.0
I feel like if I had read this in 2012, I would've liked it way more. Alas.
The good: This is a YA fantasy paint by the numbers, but the general world and magic does have a bit of freshness to it. The quality of the writing itself, like the actual words and sentence structure, is above average.
The rest:: After an interesting beginning, this unfortunately falls into a rut in the middle of this book that exposes the thin characters and patchy world building. The bulk of this book feels like spinning our wheels and getting absolutely nowhere. Everything that happens through that middle feels like we are heading through a trope checklist. The characters are all incredibly one note, and that single note is bashed over our heads. By the time we escape the boredom of the middle of this book, the end speeds by and you are left with little grasp on world or plot.
Meh. Not really interested in reading more.
