This is a collection of stories that varies in the genres: from horror inspired by Philippine folklore, mythology and urban legends, to melancholic dystopia, fairy tale fantasy, and sweet gay urban fantasy romance. Mostly, the stories are dark and bittersweet, some of them hauntingly beautiful in their execution, prose beautifully written and dream-like.
There are a few stories that didn't work for me, that left me a bit "that's that? really?" but most of the time I enjoyed this book a lot, and few of the stories managed to sucker-punch breath from me (it's a good thing I read one story per day because after some of them I just needed more than a few minutes to collect my thoughts). I also liked Philippine folklore (that I didn't know anything about before reading this book), learning amazing stuff from the creepy monsters to myths and folk tales; and generally the way these stories explore different living experiences of living in Philippines, queerness, girlhood and womanhood through magic and horror.
I absolutely recommend this fantastic collection and I hope to see more from Isabel Yap.
