So. It’s not something I would usually read. It was chosen as the book of the month for October and I thought why not to try it.
Yes, this book is weird. But there's an explanation for that, at the very end. It wasn't a huge plot twist since it was hinted at throughout the story, but still shocking enough. However, my complaint is that, while it explains some things that happened, it doesn't explain everything. I searched for theories on the internet, and every single one of them explain some things while leaving the others out. Was everything even real? If not then what was the point of the story ? I could reread it to find out more but the thing is that I’m not even that interested in the story. Because the interesting part of the mystery, the very point that kept me reading was explained at the end, although it didn’t cover everything.
The main character isn’t likable either. She’s very prejudiced, envious and hates everyone that has a better life than hers. The secondary cast is just as lacking but it’s understandable on their part, since we’re reading this story from a first person view, we’re literally in Samantha’s head, like literally. So obviously, their development will reflect that.
My second complaint is that it didn’t deliver on the horror aspect. It was weird but that was all. Some weird rituals going on, some kinds of monsters that they summon, some carnal desires involved because why not make it as weird as we can, right? Some little blood splash here and there. There was only one scene where it was thoroughly described but other than that, it was just mentioned at best. No jumpscare, no tension, no goosebumps, no thrills… Nothing. Was it the writing that didn’t make it as horror as it should be? Or was it intended? Who knows? All I know is that the result is something so weird. So.
Now I’m gonna give credit where it’s due. The writing style wasn’t so bad. I mean the author made a good use of different kinds of imagery to show Samantha’s state of mind. When she was happy or satisfied, or when she remembered good memories from childhood, the descriptions were such that it was almost reminiscent of fairy tales, the peaceful time under the shade of a tree on a sunny day, the little games a girl played. When she was in a negative state, her mind would come up with the most atrocious things and the writing would reflect that. So yeah, that bit was nice.
Overall, aside from that one good thing that unfortunately is too weak to compensate for all the bad ones, it didn’t have anything interesting going on. If you want to read something weird and bizarre with a huge plot twist at the end, I’m 100% positive that there are better ones out there.
