With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo
4.0
A beautiful book that talks about all the hard topics of being young and BIPOC in a world that privileges the white. It’s all about a teen mother who loves to cook, but struggles with trust, societal norms, change, and following her dreams in order to give her daughter a good chance at life. Even if you are not a teen mother, some message in this book will relate to you whether you are currently a teen or have not been a teen in a long time - let’s just say it took me back to those days of uncertainty of leaving high school and everything you’re used to. It took me awhile to get into the style of writing of this book. The way this author wrote the book perfectly encapsulates that of a young mind. It enables the reader to connect to the main character, Emoni, on a more personal level. I think because I haven’t been that age in what feels like awhile, it was hard to get into the swing of the writing, although, I didn’t hate it. Also has anyone tried these recipes? Cause they sound bomb and I’m honestly thinking about it even though I don’t have cooking magic.
