It’s rare to find a piece of dystopian literature that is such a slow burn, and I’ll admit that made it a bit of a challenging read for me, as someone who likes a bit more action and intrigue earlier on. But I appreciate that Rice was trying to do this book differently, firmly centring the narrative in Indigenous identities and worldviews and actively decolonizing the genre.
