The New Couple in 5B by Lisa Unger

3.0

Just a very confusing thriller that didn't really work in the end. I got really tired of Rosie. And the other characters fell flat after a while. Full review to come.

I honestly have to be in the mood for Lisa Unger's books and only because some of the twists get a bit ridiculous and I tend to get fed up with the main character. The main character in this one is writer, Rosie Lowan. Rosie is infatuated with her husband, Chad, an up and coming actor. When Chad's uncle passes away, they are both shocked to find out that he has left them his very luxurious apartment on Murray Hill at the Windemere in New York. Rosie though is stressed, not only because she knows that unless she is able to finish and sell her next book, she and Chad will not be able to stay long in the apartment, but also that she keeps seeing people who are not there, and keeps getting obscure warnings that things are not right in her new home.

Honestly, read this with a grain of salt. The whole book telegraphs what is going on pretty fast and I think that Unger dropped the ball on only showing one couple in the Windemere. I think that if she had "shown" us all of the deaths that would have worked. I was not in the mood for us to stay with one of the past characters the whole way through. Her whole story was boring and didn't leave a lot of sympathy as you are reading.

When the book shifts to present day with Rosie you are going to want to bang your head. I think that Unger playing not with just the thriller aspect, but also fantasy (cue hauntings) just didn't work in the end. There felt like a lot of things were happening that only made sense if you had just ignored everything that was going on.

The ending takes forever to get going and once again I was left shaking my head at Rosie.
