Fire by John Boyne

5.0

Not since Maurice in A Ladder To the Sky have I been so chilled to the bone by a character. Boyne once again gives a voice to the villain and, like a car crash, it was hard to look away.

This is the third installment from Boyne’s Element series. Each one has successively built up in tension, depravity, and sinisterism…I can only imagine what Boyne has in store for his last installment!

I think these books are best to go in blind. While they are a series, it’s not necessary to read them in order, though as I just mentioned, the momentum really does feel like it building to a massive climax…so maybe it would be best to read them in order?

Again, as mentioned in previous reviews, Boyne shows mastery in creating such well-crafted, heart-stopping, anxiety-producing stories in just under 170 pages. I cannot wait to complete the reading experience with Air, which publishes in May 2025.
