Normally I don’t have a hard time keeping attention to an audiobook but it was a real struggle on this one. I caught myself drifting off a lot with this book and that is never a good sign. I also read a plot summary at the end and I was reassured by it, that I still got the most important plot points.
Yes those are older books and they tend to have a weaker narration but for some reason the monotonous and unexpressive narration got me particularly hard in this one. At least partly the plot has to be blamed by this.
First of all there was a lot of Drow politicking in this one and I can’t really stand those anymore. It just feels all very same-y and very few of the characters involved in that really stick with me.
Secondly we have Drizzt and Cattie-Brie and their romance subplot which I really hate. It just feels creepy and forced but it might finally be over after this book, we’ll see. Aside from that they did a lot of reminiscing about things we kind of already know and there also have been long “training montages” ugh!
The middle part where we had a “time of trouble” where magic stopped functioning also felt like really long and inconsequential drag.
Once we got to the titular siege in the final two parts the book picked up. I did end rather quickly though and felt overall slightly disappointing.
I did love the recurrence of some of the more silly side characters like the wacky wizard family the Harpells and of course Thibbledorf Pwent the battlerager and his Gutbuster Brigade. I would sooo be down to read a side story just featuring them.
Unfortunately if the best part of the book are the silly parts I feel like that just doesn’t bode well for the overall experience, making this my lowest rated Drizzt book so far.
So far the final books of each set have all been my favorites, so let’s see if Passage to Dawn as the final book of the Legacy of the Drow continues that trend.
P.S. I’m also a little bit pissed at the ending. The mysterious prisoner of Drizzt’s past has to be Wulfgar right? That would mean that the seemingly unending cycle of fakeout deaths / resurrections continues …
