this is, perhaps, not the best place to start josé saramago with. although i appreciate the literary style, there was none of the charm that i expected this to have: the stories far too short for me to ever truly absorb the soul of the work. nevertheless, "the centaur" alone makes this a worthwhile reading experience—if only i could say the same about the other stories!
