Picking Cotton: Our Memoir of Injustice and Redemption by Ronald Cotton, Jennifer Thompson-Cannino

5.0

Wow. This book is infuriating, frustrating, heart-breaking and empowering. My soul ran through a gamut of emotions: anger, disgust, fear, rage, guarded hope, utter disappointment. I am still left torn about how to feel for Jennifer. As a woman, I can't imagine the struggles she has gone through after being raped. As a Black woman, I feel immense anger for how she almost destroyed yet another Black man's life. As a human, I admire Ronald's ability to forgive, though I am not so sure I would be able to arrive at the same place that he has. Whether you are Black or White, you need to read this book. It allows you to see both sides of this broken system we call justice.
