The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins
5.0
“‘That’s the risk in working to be a dangerous person,’ she said. ‘There’s always the chance you’ll run into someone who’s better at it than you.’”
Lots of impulse reactions on this one: Completely batshit. Real fucking whackadoo. What and, more importantly, why? Absolutely loved it. Can’t stop thinking about it. I-????
Hawkins’ reflection of power and cruelty are maddeningly human, even when the creators seem so otherworldly, and are, at times. Impeccable character creation and engagement. The world building? The literally unhinged plot? Cyclical and simultaneously unpredictable.
Like Drew Magary’s “The Hike”, which I reviewed awhile back, this is another book where very quickly in, you realize the points don’t matter and you go with god. Similarly again, this never ends up being frustrating or exasperating. Just hold on tight.
CW/TW: everything.
4.5/5 Don’t ask me what this book was about cos I can’t tell you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
