The Help by Kathryn Stockett

4.25

Beautiful

4.25 stars

Update: This was originally a 5-star review but after looking at my notes and some of the popular reviews, I felt uneasy about some of the messages that the author was putting out. Particularly from this line, “Good help only comes once in awhile ". It waters down the lesson of the story to, “We should be kind to our help, for they do everything for us and expect little in return”, rather than “We should address the racial biases amongst ourselves and work to tackle a system that has institutionalized racism by making maid servantry the only legitimate occupation that black females can work in.” . But I think that there were very good examples of messages that addressed the latter theme.

Original Review
If this is our modern day, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, well… I can see why it became as popular as it did.
Loved the movie, Torn to bits by the story. I was 9 when this thinkpiece came out and I’m a full adult now, fully appreciative of it.
