The Boy with the Cuckoo-Clock Heart by Mathias Malzieu

2.0

This is a fairy tale for adults, think Tim Burton. I listened to this on audio, read by Jim Dale (of the Harry Potter books). I thought the narration by Dale added a lot to this little book, and in fact I’m not sure I would have actually read it in book form. In spite of the steam punk genre, at its heart (so to speak) is a coming of age story. It’s about a boy who is born with a frozen heart and has a new Cuckoo-Clock heart installed by an unconventional and experimental doctor who winds up raising the boy as her own. Although the doctor warns the boy he must avoid anger and love if he wants to survive he inevitably falls in love and embarks on a journey to find his lost love. There is lots of melodrama in the telling of this story with a little whimsy thrown in for good measure, plus a dash of metaphorical sex for something really different. I doubt if I will remember much about this book, but it wasn’t a bad way to while away an afternoon listening to it while I worked on my needlepoint.
