A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

5.0

What starts as a senior capstone project turns into a whirlwind journey for Pippa Fitz-Amobi and the reader. This YA novel shows Pip's abilities as an investigative journalist, but also the prejudices that can run deep in a small-town rocked by scandal. TW: murder, stalking, animal cruelty.

Everyone who lives in town knows that five years ago, Sal Singh killed Andie Bell. The police thought it, Andie Bell's family thought it, and since Sal Singh killed himself shortly after, with evidence of the murder on his body, it was believable. But Pip isn't so sure. Having aspirations of going to Columbia for journalism, Pip decides to delve into this mystery for her senior project. Showing her courage at every turn, Pippa quickly realizes that she may be onto something - mainly because someone is going out of their way to scare her off the case. Befriending Ravi, Sal's younger brother, she quickly shows her determination for proving that Sal was innocent. Uncovering shady cops, inept journalists and too many people who seem to have something to hide, Pippa's list of suspects continues to grow. Will she figure out who really committed the crime? or will her project end in her determining it was Sal all along?

Written as a novel and journal entries of Pippa's investigation and interviews, the changes in perspective really helped the story along and made this novel a quick, interesting, intriguing read. Having always found investigative journalism an interesting story line, I was immediately absorbed into this book. Add in the thriller aspect of the potential real killer trying to throw Pip off, and the maybe love story that is building between her and Ravi, and there were plenty of reasons for me to be hooked on this book. I definitely want to continue with this series, as I hear book two is even better!
