I was really skeptical about reading Jean Rhys as part of a modernism module at uni, since I really was not a fan of Wide Sargasso Sea when I read it a few years ago, but this blew me away. Brutally depressing and pretty much plot-less, the stream of consciousness is beautiful and heartbreaking.
