I was already enjoying the creepy gothic atmosphere of this book, and I fully expected it to go in a more classically gothic direction of a haunting – the plot twist left me gobsmacked, and full of horror and revulsion, and yet at many points, I found it a struggle to put this book down. The descriptive writing can switch from beautiful and whimsical to grotesque and chill-inducing at the drop of a hat, and I really do feel like something unique in premise was achieved here. I think there are probably many more nods to other famous texts within this genre that I, unfortunately, was not able to pick up on. Maybe in the future, when I am more well-read than I am today, I will return to this novel and it will have even more to offer me.
The only reason that I am not giving this novel a full 5 stars, is that I felt like the descriptions of sexual violence (personally) were unnecessary, and there was already a major overarching plot & theme to represent the growing loss of control and autonomy that Noemí was feeling.
Graphic: Body horror and Violence
Moderate: Incest, Racism, Sexism, and Sexual assault
