The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas by Machado de Assis

3.0

Very interesting premise and nothing like I've ever read. This book is very sarcastic and I like how the author talks to the readers. But I can't help but just hate Brás Cubas, he comes across as an snobby, judgemental rich boy.

I initially thought his life would mature him but he just got worse as he aged. He squandered money, lived without any aim or passion, had an outrageous affair and still had to gall to demand better of life.

Lobo Neves was a good person and yet Brás chose to seduce his wife and keep having an affair for many years. He fell in love with Marcela and called her all manner of ugly profanities once she lost her beauty. He then left a wonderful girl just because she had a slight limp.

The premis of the book and the execution is wonderful but painfully overshadowed by an arrogant man, who does awful things just because he's rich.
