The Marigold by Andrew F. Sullivan

5.0

Angry, fun, and altogether possible, this bleak near-future story about Toronto is equal parts Lovecraft and William Gibson. There’s lots of other horror and sci-fi influences flowing through the book: Raimi, Romero, Dick, Atwood, and I could go on and on.

This my favourite book of the year, by far. It’s mixture of pathos and putrescence, the sublime and the slimy, short and long form narrative. This is an inventive novel that resists definition and yet is so accessible.

Also, this captures Developer Toronto in a way so few have: endless growth is not possible, and the people who believe in it don’t become monstrous, they began that way and accepted it long ago.

Could not recommend this book highly enough.
