Aerie and Reckoning by Thomas E. Sniegoski

Read at your own caution. Major spoilers in this review!

I'm the kind of person who can find the good in any book, however small. And I have to say that these two things kind of irked me in the beginning:
The pace of the story and the talking dog.

The first book "Aerie"...I didn't like much. The pace or writing - I don't know which - was a little off. I guess because I haven't read the first book yet (darn you Wal-Mart) I was a little lost at first. Gabriel (the talking dog I mentioned) really kind of made me say "...Huh...." to say the least. I'm not usually a big fan of talking animals outside of cartoons. Key word: usually. Though he took a little while to get used to, I ended up liking the Lab.
Speaking of the characters, there was some hit and misses. Lorelei and Vilma never felt real to me. They just seemed to float around the story. Sure they were useful (Lorelei saved 'em all, Vilma gave the story a "drive" with her need of saving every two seconds) but that was it. I would have expected more from the two girl main characters.
On the other hand, I was in a bit of an in between with one character: Lucifer. After a few passages from his POV I pretty much guessed who he was but he wasn't he supposed to be eeeeviillll? I mean, my Christain upbringing taught me as much (I quite enjoyed this new angle by the way). But in this book he seemed to truly regret his sins and accept his punishment. I even kind of like him and I actually felt bad for him when he couldn't return to Heaven. Weird.

For the most part, I like the book. Might have been a little generous with the stars (I normally would've put three stars at the most) but I still liked it.
