Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune
5.0
Never in my life have I read a book about love, death, and grief that was suited with such a PLOT TWIST, and a beautiful one at that (and I’ve read a lifetime of books for my short time here on Earth). Those are often reserved for thrillers and horror, and it takes a special author to send a chill down your spine… out of love . T.J. Klune, you have outdone yourself with this one, my friend.
I would have read this book much faster (took me three days), if I hadn’t had the need to stop time and put the book down, in fear I’d lose the human-to-book character relationships that I was fictitiously building with Wallace, Hugo, Mei, and Nelson too soon. I didn’t want it to end. I didn’t want to stop knowing them and growing with them.
For the person who is grieving right now, to the one who may be afraid of death, for the one who needs to laugh through their tears, and for the one that simply needs to be uplifted and encouraged, this book was written for you. I sobbed and laughed through this entire novel. My heart broke and healed a hundred times.
“Lives don’t end, they move on.” I think this incredibly beautiful novel will stick with me for a long time coming. What a touching love letter to those who may be afraid of death.
