Dear Sister: A Memoir of Secrets, Survival, and Unbreakable Bonds by Michelle Horton

emotional hopeful reflective medium-paced

2.75

Nikki Addimando is a survivor.
Her sister, Michelle Horton, took on the task of caring for her children while serving a prison sentence. And now, telling her story.
Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for my gifted copy for review!
Dear Sister is the story of Nikki, who killed her partner Chris after years of horrible physical and sexual abuse.
Readers are taken through the early days of the crime, and the legal processes leading to her conviction, imprisonment, and appeals.
But it's not only the story of domestic violence. Ultimately, it's about family.
Now, as we know, it's entirely challenging to rate/review a memoir.
I'm not sure what was holding me back from fully connecting with this book. I think I kept wanting more about Nikki's specific experiences. Yet that's not always the focus of Dear Sister, nor does it claim to be. It's a memoir of sister Michelle's, and Nikki's children's experiences with Nikki's situations.
The writing is tight and skilled, and this is an emotional and noteworthy read bringing to light many important issues. Recommended.
 Released on Jan. 30.
