Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell
5.0
A thriller that delivers twists and turns but introduces them with such subtlety you almost don’t realise you’re in the thick of things until you’re mid-gasp.
I was so surprised to have really found myself heavily engaged with this book. Told, largely, through the perspective of a Mother who’s daughter is long missing, I thought we might be getting a Mum-turned-Detective style read that I find highly overrated. But what we got was the perspective of a grieving mother, and her struggles to connect with the people close in her life who all experienced the same loss.
Lisa Jewell delicately leaves breadcrumbs throughout the book for the most eagle eye of readers and ties everything together before the acknowledgements begin, for those who’d rather “experience” the shock, wonder, confusion and more along with our Laurel Mack - a mum just doing her best.
