While the story is character driven, the narrative is about what these two men represent to each other: an escape and the potential to lead a different life. The writing fits the story like a glove. I will definitely be reading more of Proulx's work. My only complaint is that the format loses the story at times, there are a few sentences that are twisted in ways that make no sense and I have to reread a few times to get the original intention. Other than that, hats off.
Graphic: Child abuse, Hate crime, and Sexual content
Moderate: Death, Homophobia, Physical abuse, Vomit, and Alcohol
There is altercation between Ennis, a main character, and Alma, his ex-wife. She is being homophobic and he grabs her by the wrist, leaving a bruise. An hate crime is discussed at length which Ennis's father joked about and used to deter his sons from homosexuality.
